Quilty pleasures

Dry, originally uploaded by jiihaa.

Even though the last few days have been full of worry, with some bits of fear mixed in, I took today an opporturnity to take a couple of photos, while walking outside with the children.

This dried up berry pretty much sums up my feelings. But I felt that you have to continue with the normal routines, even some pleasures, although the life around you is shaking at foundations.

Personal worries aside, my opinion piece on societal issues in Finland appeared today in the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper. The title (given by the editors, the original was quite provocative) was "The human being is forgotten in the innovation society" (in Finnish, "Innovaatioyhteiskunnassa ihminen unohtuu").

As I'm not subscribing to the magazine (though it is the biggest in Finland), and didn't have time to look at it while at work, I'm a bit unsure of how much editing was done to the text. (The web archive of HS only shows a few sentences from the beginning.) However, I received a couple of comments which seem to indicate that the editors hadn't made big censorship to the text.

Update: While writing this I got a spam mail with the title "Bigger Your Penis and Save $xxx". If only life would be so easy to fix.

I certainly had to laugh at that last sentence, as I get many such e-mails daily. Fortunately, my spam filtering is petty good, so I only have to deal with the occasional Viagra advertisement.

On a more somber note, I've been following your blog and reading about the shootings in Finland. Sad, to be sure. This year, my wife and I moved my son, a 16-year old from public school to private school.

Basically, his attitude was faltering. He was around a bunch of kids who were going no where. He was also incurring a bit of stress as a few of his classmates had died, the school had been locked down a couple of times because a gun was reported and found in the lockers. There were metal detectors everywhere, etc. A very stressful situation.

My wife and I decided to move him and he's much happier and our bank account quite a bit smaller, but he's a happier kid now.

I can certainly empathize with you and understand your pain. I'm just happy that I could do something about it before it became too late. And here I thought that it was only happening here.

Thanks for sharing these experiences. It is indeed hard when such a crisis hits, but I guess you just have to take one day at a time.
